Developmental Service Worker Training Program

Livingwaters College of Healthcare’s DSW program will prepare you to Developmental service workers (DSWs) providing help to people with developmental disabilities at all phases of life. Livingwaters Students interested in a career in the healthcare industry and providing care for individuals with developmental disabilities might consider this degree, which is available in the GTA with flexible scheduling.

Our small class sizes enable one-on-one attention, and our faculty team is made up of experts in the field who work in developmental services. Experts in the field of developmental services contributed to the creation of our curriculum, guaranteeing that the courses are up to date and pertinent.

About The Program

What You Will Learn In The Classroom

Your coursework begins with a review of the field of developmental services, the various categories of developmental impairments, and the spectrum of community support services accessible to this population. Following that, you will study person-centered planning, dual diagnosis, health and wellness, basic pharmacology, assisting those with autism and other complex needs, sign language and augmentative forms of communication, and appropriate ways to deal with those who have been abused. Finally, you will gain expertise in problem-solving and establishing interpersonal relationships.

What You Will Learn In The Labs

In our labs, which offer an ideal environment for developing skills for working with people who have limited verbal abilities, you will also advance your knowledge.  You will learn how to assist your clients by promoting their adaptive skills, maintaining a safe environment for them, modeling and promoting a healthy lifestyle, managing their medication, and applying crisis intervention and other intervention strategies when needed.

What You Will Do During Career Search

You can assist persons with disabilities in their daily lives, employment, and community participation by pursuing a career in developmental services. You will put your skills to use helping persons who have autism, intellectual disabilities, or other needs.

Introduction to the Field of Developmental Services

In this course all the Bases, theoretical foundations, principles, regulations and all the existing regulatory framework within the field of professional practice of a student trained in DSW will be covered.

The Nature of Developmental Disabilities

This course welcomes you to a world of understanding, kindness and recognition of individuals who, as members of Canadian society, deserve our respect, help and collaboration. The perspective offered by the course will allow students to identify and actively participate in the assimilation of different types of disabilities.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Our program is framed within the existing regulations of the OAP (Ontario Autism Program) providing students with all the training, service and support that a patient with Autism requires. In the same way, the program allows the understanding of the different types of Autism and the tools to identify the best way to address said disability.

Grammar and Writing Skills for the Health Professional

We all know that in the world of health professionals, there is terminology proper to medical specialties, pharmacology, medical equipment, and proper language for each of the diseases. With this course, the students will be at the level of expressing themselves and communicating correctly in the field of health, as well as knowing how to handle the most used formats in the trade.
